When trying to install it via the console, there are confusing messages about needed dependencies which are seemingly already met on a 64-bit system. Are you using an old version of Skype? When I go into my Video Options to test video I get a black screen. If you have installed Ubuntu restricted extras then you should already have it if not open Software Centre and install Ubuntu restricted extras from there. Brightness is sometimes wrong (black image).
