I did all the obvious things like zapping PRAM and resetting PMU and SMC crap, that stuff doesn't really help. I bot used headphones and updated before sound stopped working. I recently bought Snow Leopard for my late 2007 model 13" Macbook (the old white one).

However, in Macintosh HD / Library / Preferences I have no Audio folder! You may have trouble logging on after a restart, if this happens... Sounds working perfectly now, there was obviously a glitch in the headphone socket that prevented the functioning of the output device.
When i reboot i can hear the chime. After posting that, I noticed a red light coming out of my headphone jack. Now, I wanted to upgrade to 10.6.3 and after that I have no sound. And to humour you, I have just again done so I'm double-checking the few things that I haven't double-checked.
